There are alternatives but they are quite a bit more expensive...which is why they did it. They called it a "health" bill, but it was really about making ammunition more costly and less available. There are quite a few high end rifle bullets made of 100% gilding metal by Barnes and a few others but pistol bullets offer very limited choices in a lead free composition.

This is part and parcel to the EPA passing new regulations a few years ago for full lead smelters that smelt lead from raw ore. There was only ONE smelter in the US that even did this. it has been in continuous operation for about a century and was a family owned business. The requirements are simply too expensive so they will close this month forever. This will require us to import lead for the first time.
